This Pineapple Margarita recipe gives a sweet tropical twist to a classic margarita, for a smooth and delicious cocktail.
I love experimenting with different margaritas and seeing how the different flavors complement the classic tequila/lime/orange combo. Some of my favourites include the passionfruit and spicy versions.
And this Margarita with pineapple is definitely up there with my favourites too.
Adding pineapple juice to a margarita not only adds natural sweetness, but it helps mellow out the flavour of the tequila, and adds a little dilution, for those who find straight up margaritas a little strong.

Ingredients
You will need the following ingredients for this recipe for pineapple margaritas:
- Pineapple Juice - I use freshly squeezed pineapple juice using my cold press juicer. However if you don't have a juicer you can try blending and straining fresh pineapple or you can substitute with shop bought pineapple juice. If using shop bought, look for a good quality one, not from concentrate.
- Tequila - for the best margaritas you need to use good quality tequila. Most margarita recipes sugggest using a blanco tequila made from 100% agave, as it is has a purer flavor. For something a bit more mellow, you could opt for a reposado, which has been aged in oak making it a little smoother. Avoid gold tequila, which has added colors and caramel. Read more here.
- Cointreau - you can substitute for another orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.
- Lime juice - from a freshly squeezed lime (not bottled).
- Salt - to salt the rim of the cocktail glass. I use coarsely ground salt.
- Ice cubes - for shaking in the shaker and for serving your margarita 'on the rocks'.
- Slice of fresh lime - to garnish
- Slice of fresh pineapple - to garnish
You will need
You need the following equipment to make pineapple margaritas:
- Cocktail Shaker
- Cocktail Measure - my cocktail shaker has a 1-oz measure included with its lid. If yours doesn't then you can use a purpose bought cocktail measure, shot glass or anything of a similar size.
- Citrus juicer - a proper citrus juicer is the easiest and most efficient way to juice limes, especially when you use a lot of limes making margaritas. I have one like this but one like this also works well for cocktails if you are just doing one or two limes at a time. You can also buy electric ones to make life even easier.
- Cocktail strainer - My cocktail shaker has a built-in strainer so if yours does too, you can just use this. Otherwise a cocktail strainer is useful for straining the margarita out of the shaker into your glass. This is the type of strainer used in most cocktail bars.
- Margarita glass - I prefer my margarita served on the rocks and so I use an Old Fashioned glass like this. However you could also use a classic Margarita glass like these fun Cactus ones.
- Shallow plate or bowl - for salting the rim of your margarita glass.
How to make a pineapple margarita
First, start by preparing your margarita glass by salting the rim of the glass for that classic margarita look and taste.
To do this:
- Coarsely grind some salt onto a plate or shallow bowl.
- Brush the rim of the glass with lime juice (you can use a quarter of lime, or just use the shell of the lime you just squeezed for lime juice).
- Dip the rim of the glass into the salt, rotating as you go, until it is fully coated.
To make the margarita, measure the pineapple juice, tequila, Cointreau (or other orange liqueur) and lime juice into the cocktail shaker.
Half fill the shaker with ice, tightly secure the lid and give it a good shake for at least 10 seconds. Do this high above your shoulder so you look like a seasoned cocktail pro!
The cool thing about pineapple juice is it goes frothy when shaken, so give it a good vigorous shake for a nice frothy finish to your margarita.
Fill up your prepared margarita glass with ice and strain the drink into the glass. Garnish with a slice of lime and a slice of pineapple.
A note about cocktail measures
Most cocktail recipes come with measurements in ounces or ml, some will use shots and others will use parts.
For reference:
- 1 oz = 30ml
- 1 shot = 1.5 fl oz or 45ml
At the end of the day, cocktails are about getting the proportions correct rather than exact measurements.
As long as you use the same measuring device for all the ingredients, it shouldn't matter whether you use a proper cocktail measure, a shot glass or even an eggcup! This is why you often see recipes using 'parts' in place of exact measurements.
