This Thermomix Apple Crumble recipe will bring back wonderful childhood memories with its warm comforting flavours.
If you had a British parent or grandparent then you will definitely have grown up having apple crumble for dessert! If you grew up in North America you are probably more likely to call it an Apple Crisp, but they are essentially very similar.
Apple Crumble apparently first came about during World War II, when rationing meant that food was scarce. This dessert used standard store cupboard ingredients for a sweet treat.
My mum often made a crumble for Sunday dinner - she would make apple and blackberry or rhubarb crumbles, but plain old apple was always my favourite.
This is comfort food at its finest - and it will also make your kitchen smell amazing while it is cooking!

Apple Crumble Ingredients
The beauty of apple crumble is that it uses store cupboard ingredients, plus the fruit.
For the fruit
- Apples - you can choose which apples you prefer for this dish. If you like a more sharp or tart flavoured crumble then go with a green apple like Granny Smiths. If you prefer a sweeter dish, then choose a sweeter red apple.
- Plain Flour
- Sugar - you can use whatever sugar you have in your pantry. I usually use caster sugar here as it mixes in easily with the apples. The amount you need to use will depend on the sweetness of the apples.
- Lemon Juice
- Cinnamon
For the crumble topping
- Plain Flour
- Sugar - again you can choose what sugar to use, or what you happen to have in your pantry. I like the combo of soft brown sugar and caster sugar.
- Butter - butter should be chilled, straight from the fridge. This is important to get the right pebbly texture for the topping.
- Oats - (optional) a traditional apple crumble recipe would not use oats and I had never heard of people adding oats to crumble until recently. (I think this is an American addition used in Apple Crisp). However, it does add an extra element of crunch and interest to the texture, so if you like you can add a couple of tablespoons of oats to the topping.
How to make Apple Crumble
For the fruit filling:
Peel and core the apples and chop into 2cm cubes. Put the apples in a bowl and mix together with the other filling ingredients.
Tip: I love this apple corer and slicer to make preparing the apples super simple. It's one of my favourite kitchen accessories; I also use it most days for lunch box prep.
Next grease an ovenproof baking dish and line it with the apple filling.
For the crumble topping:
Traditionally to make a crumble topping you would use your fingers to rub the butter into the flour and sugar. However, here you can let the Thermomix do all the hard work for you.
Simply add all the ingredients to the Thermomix bowl (chop the butter into cubes first) and mix for 20 seconds. It should be well mixed but with some small pebble-like lumps still in it.
Sprinkle the topping over the apples and pop it into the oven for 35-40 minutes. It is ready when the filling is bubbling and the crumble is a rich golden brown.
What do you serve apple crumble with?
Typically an old fashioned apple crumble would be served with lashings of hot custard (see my Thermomix custard recipe here).
However, like apple pie, vanilla ice-cream is a more popular accompaniment to apple crumble these days. The cold ice-cream with the hot crumble is a match made in heaven, while the creaminess of the ice-cream is wonderful with the crunch of the crumble.
Thick pouring cream or some homemade whipped cream is another delicious option.
FAQs and Top Tips
The apple crumble is a traditional British dessert, while an apple crisp is a North American version. The main difference is that apple crips uses oats in the topping, making it more crunchy, while a traditional crumble topping is more cakey in texture.
Which apples to use for crumble depends on how sweet you like it. If you prefer a more tart flavour, then opt for a green apple such as Granny Smith or cooking apple such as Bramley. If you prefer a sweeter flavour then choose a sweet red apple such as Pink Lady apples.
Apple crumble can be served hot or cold. However, nothing beats a warm apple crumble with icy cold vanilla ice cream on top!
When the crumble is done the apple filling should be bubbling and the crumble topping should be golden brown in colour.
Apple crumble will store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Be sure it is completely cooled and covered with plastic wrap before refrigerating.
Yes you can - if you are in a hurry you can reheat it in the microwave, but be aware that the topping may go soggy. Reheating it in the oven will allow the topping to crunch up again.
Yes you can! Store it in an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
