These homemade Thermomix tortillas are so delicious and easy to make that you will never want to buy shop bought ones again!

The kneading function is definitely one of the highlights of owning a Thermomix for me. Making pizza dough, pita bread and homemade flour tortillas are all just so easy.

    Thermomix Tortillas

This flour tortilla recipe can be life changing - seriously, these easy flour tortillas are so good that you won't believe you wasted all that money buying ones from the store.

Warm and fresh from the pan, they cannot be beaten.

    Homemade Tortillas Recipe

This is such an easy tortilla recipe - and only needs 4 ingredients - including water.

The recipe calls for vegetable oil. Traditionally tortillas would use lard but oil is easier and healthier to use. I often use olive oil instead of vegetable oil, but I find if you use extra virgin olive oil the taste overpowers the flavor of the tortillas. But ultimately it is up to you.

All you need to do when making tortillas from scratch is to put all the ingredients in the Thermomix, and set the machine to mix and then knead. And it's all done in a couple of minutes!

The great thing about making homemade tortillas vs pizza or pita bread, is that you don't need to wait for the dough to rise - you can make your own tortillas straight away.

    How to make homemade tortillas

With the Thermomix doing all the hard work of mixing and kneading the dough, all that you have to do is roll out the tortillas and cook them.

    Making homemade tortillas

This recipe for tortillas makes 12 tortillas, so once the dough is ready you need to divide it into 12 balls. Flour each ball and place them under a tea towel to prevent them from drying out.

    Making homemade tortillas

Now roll out each ball as thin as you can. Each tortilla should be around 8 inches in diameter, and so thin you can almost see your hand through it.

Next heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Once it is hot, place your first tortilla in the pan and cook it for around 1 minute. Then flip it and cook the other side for around 30 seconds until golden brown patches appear.

    Cooking homemade tortillas

I usually roll out my next tortilla while the one before is cooking, so you have a constant flow of tortillas on the go.

Once your easy homemade tortillas are cooked, stack them in a pile and cover with a tea towel. This will keep them warm and moist until you are ready to use them.

    How to store homemade tortillas

Once cooked, store your fresh flour tortillas in airtight bag. For the best results, put them into the bag while they are still warm.

They will last on the counter for a day or two or in the fridge for up to a week. To reheat them, you can re-heat them on the stove top, just like when you made them originally.

Alternatively, pop them in the microwave in a stack for around 30 seconds, or roll them up and cover with foil and reheat in the oven for around 15 minutes.

If you want to keep them in the freezer, try to store them with a sheet of parchment paper between each one. This will make it easier to separate them when you want to take them out the freezer.

You can also store the tortilla dough in the fridge for up to a week. Just bring it back to room temperature before you roll it out.

What to do with fresh flour tortillas

There are so many things you can make with homemade flour tortillas. Here are a few of our favorite things:

    • make homemade tortilla wraps with your favorite fillings like Chicken Caesar Salad.
    • use them to make quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos or chimichangas

        We loved these tortillas!
We have been making wraps for ages and can never find the right recipe, where the wraps stay soft after cooking. These were amazing and enjoyable the next day.

Is it okay to use breadflour or would you just use plain flour?

Hi Katherine - yes you can absolutely use Olive oil instead - but I prefer to use a lighter-tasting olive oil so that the olive oil flavour doesn't overpower the tortillas.
