This easy Pico de Gallo recipe is very quick to make and is perfect served as a dip with tortilla chips, or alongside your favorite Mexican dish.

I love how refreshing this fresh tomato salsa is. The onions and jalapeno give a lovely kick to the dish, while the zestiness of the lime juice adds to that overall freshness.

a plate of Pico de Gallo

I love to serve this homemade pico de gallo alongside my Thermomix Guacamole with tortilla chips for dipping in.

Alternatively, it is great spooned on top of Beef Chili nachos, Beef Burrito Bowls or Chicken Fajita Bowls.

What is in Pico de Gallo?

Pico de gallo ingredients include fresh tomatoes, onion, jalapeno, fresh cilantro, lime juice and salt.

    And that's it!

You could also add other ingredients to this basic salsa recipe of course. Popular additions include avocado, corn and mango. Personally I like to stick to the classic version.

Because you only need a few ingredients for pico de gallo, you need to make sure you are using the best produce you can find. And everything should be fresh!

Buy the best tomatoes you can afford and make sure they are ripe but still firm. Roma tomatoes are good, but any ripe, red, firm tomato will do.

I like to use red onion, but most fresh tomato salsa recipes call for white onion - so it's up to you! I've even used green onions when that's all I had in the fridge.

You could switch the jalapeno for another type of chili pepper if that's all you have. Remember to adjust the quantity depending on the strength of the type of chili you use.

The lime juice should be freshly squeezed, and the cilantro should be freshly chopped.

How to make Pico de Gallo

To make this yummy homemade fresh tomato salsa, all you need to do is chop up the tomato, onion, jalapeno and cilantro and mix it together.

Then squeeze over the lime and sprinkle with salt and give it another good stir.

Let it rest for at least 15 minutes before serving. You can also make it ahead and keep it in the fridge until you are ready to serve it. But best to bring it back to room temperature before serving.

If you have leftovers (leftovers?!) then you can keep them in the fridge overnight too.
